The Technology
We render 3D worlds & datasets at cinematic quality directly in a browser, on any device:
•Photogrammetry scans
•Field recordings
•Ecological surveys
Design and user experience sit at the centre of the work. The core foundation of what we do is that design is often undervalued in scientific presentation.
By focusing our resource on user experience research, we are finding new ways of making the inaccessible accessible, turning data that was locked inside research software into something everyone can explore.

Why Interaction Matters
Navigating a true-to-life ecosystem drives emotional connection in a way passive media cannot. When a user can spin a coral head and see structural change over time, abstract concepts like bleaching or restoration become tangible, and the reef stops being a story told at them and becomes a place they have actually been.
AgencyUsers guide their own journey, creating deeper psychological investment than a plaque or a video. Exploration at their own pace, on their own terms.
ScaleTrue-to-life 3D reveals the size and structural complexity of coral that flat media flattens. The architecture of the reef becomes something you can feel.
DiscoveryLearning becomes exploration. Users go looking for information rather than waiting to be shown, and they remember what they find for themselves.
"By focusing on actions that leverage human-centered design, learning science, and emerging technologies, we can impactfully reach as many people as possible to transform ocean indifference into ocean advocacy."The Hydrous • https://thehydro.us/ocean-empathy

The Conservation Disconnect
Three gaps between the reef work already happening and the people who would care about it most.
Locked Inside Research Software
The world's marine science is being captured at extraordinary fidelity, in photogrammetry scans, structure-from-motion datasets, and ecological surveys. Most of it lives inside specialist software that only researchers can open, leaving the public disconnected from the ecosystems that data describes.
Design as an Afterthought
Scientific visualisation has historically prioritised accuracy over experience. The result is data that is technically rich but practically inaccessible, with interfaces built for researchers rather than the audiences whose understanding ultimately decides whether ecosystems get protected.
The Public Left Out
The people who fund conservation, vote on environmental policy, and decide where to travel rarely see the science their decisions depend on. The gap between what researchers know and what the public can experience is one of the largest barriers to ocean advocacy.

A Lobby Situated Digital Twin
We take the reef scans and survey data the marine team already has and turn them into a photoreal, interactive 3D model of the Six Senses Laamu house reef.
01
Data CollaborationWe work directly with the in-house marine team to gather existing photogrammetry scans, historical imagery, species records, and ecological survey data. No new capture workflow required on day one.
02
Pipeline ProcessingDatasets are cleaned, co-registered, and aligned into a unified 3D environment. Multiple scans across months or years are anchored to the same coordinates so change can be measured and visualised.
03
Content and BrandingThe viewer is customised to the property's brand. Species information, site stories, and guided narrative paths are developed in collaboration with the resident marine biologists.
04
Digital DeploymentProcessed models are deployed to lobby hardware, in-room tablets, and the main website as a touch-optimised, cinematic 3D experience. Hardware is installed and staff are briefed on the experience.
05
Ongoing UpdatesThe platform grows with the reef. Annual rescans, content updates, and new scientific overlays keep the experience current and build a long-term visual record of the ecosystem.

The Citizen Science Scanning Excursion
Many guests — particularly diver enthusiasts and underwater photography hobbyists — already carry the kind of camera gear needed to contribute to real photogrammetry datasets. The Living Atlas provides the framework to turn standard snorkelling and diving trips into active conservation missions. Guests contribute to real scientific data and generate shareable memories in the process.
01
The ExcursionGuests enrol in a 'Reef Mapper' dive and learn how to use the camera rigs.
02
The CaptureGuests swim guided paths to capture new structural footage.
03
The ExhibitionFootage is processed and the updated reef map goes live in the lobby, crediting the guest contributors.
04
The Take HomeGuests receive a digital memento of their contribution, extending the connection beyond the stay.

Branded Web Experience
A fully white-labelled, embeddable 3D web experience that lets prospective guests, researchers, and ocean enthusiasts explore the Six Senses Laamu house reef from any browser — extending the conservation story well beyond the physical resort.
01
Cloud OptimisationThe digital twin is compressed into a lightweight format for rapid web streaming.
02
White LabellingThe interface is customised to match Six Senses Laamu brand guidelines.
03
Simple EmbeddingThe web team receives a code snippet. Drop in as easily as a video.
04
Engagement AnalyticsTrack views, popular angles, and interaction hotspots to measure reach.

The Value EcosystemOne platform, three beneficiaries, each strengthening the others over time.
The Value EcosystemValue for the guest, the property, and the reef.
For the GuestThe reef becomes part of the stay.
Everyone Gets InNon-swimmers, families, and short stays can all experience the reef from the lobby.
A Dive Before the DiveDivers arrive at the briefing already oriented to what they will see.
Something to Take HomeGuests leave with a reef they helped document.
For the PropertyConservation investment becomes visible.
Making the Invisible VisibleMarine biology, restoration, and monitoring become something guests and press can actually see.
A Living Marketing AssetBranded 3D content grounded in real data, updating itself with every new scan.
A Category of OneNo comparable property currently offers this. Early partners lead the category.
For the ReefThe science scales, the record deepens.
More Eyes, More DataGuest participation multiplies the coverage a small marine team can achieve.
A Multi-Year ArchiveEvery scan adds to a temporal record that grows more valuable over time.
Advocacy at ScaleThousands of visitors leave with a stronger connection to the ocean.

Why The Living Atlas
The team combines a deep respect for the ocean with a technical obsession for making conservation accessible. By pairing existing marine research with modern spatial computing, the platform turns raw scientific data into experiences that build real environmental connection and give guests a reason to care about the reef long after they leave.
Low-Friction IntegrationPlugs into existing hotel hardware and works alongside resident marine biologists with minimal extra workload for either team. No new systems to learn, no new staff to hire.
Built for the Long TermEach annual scan compounds the value of the platform. A deployment that starts today becomes a multi-year visual archive of the specific reef, unique to the property and impossible to replicate retroactively.
A Lasting LegacyEvery deployment contributes to a persistent library of reef models, supporting global oceanographic research alongside the day-to-day guest experience. The science grows as the guest story does.
"To protect the ocean, people first need to understand and experience it. Our technology brings the hidden beauty of the house reef directly to current and future guests."The Living Atlas Project • Our Philosophy
